Interaction between large and small scales in the canopy sublayer

چکیده
[1] Two characteristics that distinguish canopy sublayer (CSL) turbulence from its atmospheric surface layer (ASL) counterpart are short-circuiting of the energy cascade and formation of Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) vortices near the canopy top. These two phenomena lead to nonlinear and poorly understood interactions between small and large scale eddies within the CSL absent from classical ASL turbulence. Using velocity scaling arguments and nonlinear time series analysis, we explore the degree of interaction between large and small scales in a canopy composed of densely arrayed cylinders. We found that such interactions are dynamically divided into four regions depending on the distance from the wall, and posses various degrees of nonlinearity and interaction strengths. The broader impact to CSL Large Eddy Simulations (LES) and low-dimensional dynamical systems (LDDS) models of coherent eddies is briefly discussed.

LES Study on the Structure of Coherent Eddies Inducing Predominant Perturbations in Velocities in the Roughness Sublayer over Plant Canopies
Large-eddy simulations (LESs) were performed for neutrally-stratified turbulent flows within and above a homogeneous plant canopy. 100 realizations of a three-dimensional turbulence field obtained from each of four LES runs, which di¤er in the driving force of the flow and the size of computational domain, were used in the present study. A conditional sampling technique was used to construct en...

Evaluation of Interception in Astragalus parrowianus, (Case Study: Gonbad Rangeland of Hamadan Province, Iran)
Vegetation cover is the first barrier for the raindrops resulting to the interception and infiltration loss. Interception as one of the main components of ecohydrology equation plays a major role in the water balance of rangelands. However, few studies have been done on the interception of rangeland plants in Iran. This study was carried out to find the interception rate in Astragalus parrowian...
متن کاملThe effect of ecophysiography on the quantitative characteristics of DBH, height, basal area, crown diameter and canopy area of trees in mountain forest communities (Case study: Oak-hornbeam community in Arasbaran forest)
Ecophysiography is the geography of the earth and the relationship between physiography and the ecosystem. Ecophysiography is a basis for planning processes to study the characteristics of terrestrial systems concerning the interactions between terrestrial physiography and living organisms. Due to the current state of ecosystems and the increase in natural disasters for ecosystem sustainability...
متن کاملCanopy gaps characteristics and structural dynamics in a natural unmanaged oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) stand in the north of Iran
Canopy gaps are one of the most important structural features of forest ecosystems, and studying of them can have useful results and implications for forest management. The aim of this study is investigation of characteristics and regeneration within canopy gaps in an intact beech stand in the Shastkalateh Experimental Forest of Hyrcanian region, north of Iran. All canopy gaps and related fores...
